Finally!

When I went to work this morning, my internet connection was still down, but when I came home for lunch, I checked the wireless router and saw that the pretty blue light indicating a connection was lit.  Yay!!  :)  So once again I am writing from the comfort of my couch.  I don't really have much to say about tonight's cards though....mostly because I have no clue where they came from!  They are both blank on the back, and I don't have any records showing that I received a swap from someone in Denmark.  So we'll just call this 'The Case of the Mystery Cards'.

Denmark - Ribe

Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark, dating from the 8th century, and it apparently has a Viking museum (although the link listed on Wikipedia didn't work).

Denmark - Nr. Lyngvig Fyr

The lighthouse is called Nr. Lyngvig Fyr.  Yes, the link there is from the Danish Wikipedia.  But if you use Google Chrome like I do, you get the option to translate the page into English.  I love that!

Still Down

Yes, my internet connection is still down.  And since the apartment complex office is closed weekends and holidays, I have been unable to report it as of yet.  I drove around and a few places to see if I could find someplace else that offered free wi-fi, not because I don't like Panera Bread, but just to go someplace different. I decided that the idea I had yesterday about sitting in my car and using the Staples connection was not a good one for several reason.  First, it would be darn uncomfortable to try to position the computer in a spot where I could type.  Second, it is quite warm out today, so I would have had to keep the car running to keep the air conditioning on.  With the price of gas right now, I didn't want to do that.  So I ended up back at Panera.  The good thing is that it is almost empty today, so I was able to get a bigger table than yesterday.  Makes it much easier to eat and use the computer at the same time. :)

And once again, I remembered to bring a couple of postcards along.

Kudos to you if you could identify this film as 'The Man in the Iron Mask'.  It wasn't great, and I don't think it is a movie that Leonardo DiCaprio is really known for, but at least it is a movie that I have seen. :)  The card was sent to me by Postcrosser herttamuru.

And here is a card from a movie I have not seen.

I'm not even sure what this movie is about.  I think it was based on a video game though.  Or maybe a comic book.  Or maybe neither and I'm thinking of something else entirely.  But anyway, MartHo in Taiwan sent the card to me.

Ok, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my internet will actually be working tomorrow, because maintenance will actually be around to do something about it.  If not, I may have to scream. *nodding solemnly*

Ack! No Internet Again!

There was a brief but powerful storm in my area earlier (around 2 PM), and there seemed to be a lightning strike fairly close to my apartment building.  Right after that, my internet connection went out.  Gah!  I waited for a few hours, but it didn't come back on.  So, since it was still early enough that a lot of places were open, even if it is Sunday, I decided to go down to my local Panera Bread and have something to eat...and use their free wi-fi. :)  I even remembered to bring a couple of postcards along.

Germany DE-273927 received 01-31-2009

This view of Munich, Germany came to me from Postcrosser nina23.  I visited Munich on a trip through Germany and Austria in 1997, but I'm not sure if I visited any of the buildings that you can see here.

Germany DE-262948 received 01-12-2009

I also visited this castle in Heidelberg on that same trip.  I know that I have a photo of me standing on the ramparts, but I'm not sure where that photo is at the moment.  Maybe if I can find it, I'll post it some other time...if I don't look too horrible. :)  By the way, this card was sent to me by Lillifee.

Keep your fingers crossed that my internet will be back up by tomorrow.  If not, I may have to seek out someplace with free wi-fi again.  I see on my list of connections that the Staples store down the way has a connection also.  Maybe I could sit in my car and use it.  But hopefully that won't be necessary! :)

It's My Birthday and I'll Blog if I Want To

Well, maybe 'want' isn't exactly the right word. But I still can't bring myself to not write a blog entry if I don't have a good excuse like my internet being down. :)

So yes, today was my birthday.  I spent it at the Museum of Science and Industry.  While it isn't that unusual for me to go there, today was different because I didn't go to volunteer.  Instead, I went to see BODY WORLDS & the Cycle of Life.  I had seen the previous BODY WORLDS exhibit that the museum had, so this wasn't completely new to me, but it was still interesting.  And I did get the audio tour thingy (they gave it to me for free when they saw my volunteer ID), so I got a lot more info than I would have if I had gone through the exhibit without it.  No photos were allowed in the exhibit, but you can see some pictures on the museum's website.  And oh yeah, here's a postcard.

BODY WORLDS - Football Gladiators, 2007

Come on, did you really expect me to pass up the opportunity to buy postcards?  Especially cool cut-out postcards? :)  I posted this one because this is one of the exhibits that I'm sure that I saw.  Don't you just want to say "Hey you, go put some skin on!"  No??  Just me then?  Oh well....

Since I can see all the other exhibits any time I want, I didn't spend too much time looking at other stuff.  I did however manage to sneak into the Omnimax theater to see Tornado Alley.  Ok, maybe "sneak" is the wrong word.  I didn't have a ticket, but the guy taking the tickets DID wave me in after he saw my ID. ;)

The last thing I did at the museum was to go see some new friends who share my birthday.

If you can't tell, those are newly hatched chicks.  On the side of the hatchery that you can't see here are the chicks that are a few days old.  They are always fun to watch for a little while.  And yes, I'm now done with the shamless plugs for MSI.

So I suppose I should actually post a postcard that I received in the mail.  Unfortunately, I didn't get any today, but I have plenty of others to choose from.  I received this one a few days after my birthday in 2009.  Postcrosser Merjalainen wished me a Happy Birthday in Finnish which, if I can read it correctly, is "Hyvää syntymäpäivää". Gosh, I hope that's correct....I wouldn't want to accidentally insult someone! ;)

Finland FI-556537 received 06-01-2009

Ok, I think I'm going to go to bed now.  Not a very exciting way to end my birthday, I know, but I'm tired!  Night!

Laconic

I'm so sleepy that I can barely keep my eyes open, so I'll just shut up and let you peruse these views of Prešov, Slovakia that were sent to me by Postcrosser gulooocka.

Seeing Double

Tonight's postcards have me seeing double.  The reason for that is that I have received them twice from different people.  It's quite fascinating to me that out of all the postcards available, and the wide range of postcard subjects that I list on my Postcrossing profile, I should get the same card twice.  These are not the only cards that I have received more than once either.  They are just the only ones that I could remember for sure. :)  I made a cursory glance through my old blogs to see if I had posted them before, but I didn't see them.  But if I have posted them before, too bad.  I had to see repeats, so you do too. ;)

This multiview of Finland came to me first as a swap with rsaloranta and then as an official Postcrossing card from kimkujala. I'm trying to figure out what the little round objects are with the flags in them.  They kind of look like potatoes, but I'm not sure.  Anyone know?  And hey, is that a friend of mine that I see on the left?? ;)

I'm glad that this postcard from 'Terminator 3' shows Kristanna Loken and not a certain other Terminator that has been in the news quite a bit lately...

This one was sent to me first by nordbaer as part of the Movie and Television Round Robin, and then as an official Postcrossing card from Lachgas.  Both of them are from Germany.

I was almost tempted to post each image twice just to be annoying, but I decided against it.  You're welcome. :D

Inside and Out

I almost forgot to write a post tonight.  Again.  I was watching The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and trying to think of what I needed to do before I went to bed. Suddenly it dawned on me that it was time to pick the postcards. :)

Both of tonight's postcards are from the 12 Viewcards in an Envelope Round Robin.  That means they are both unwritten and I don't have a sender to credit.  They both show the same building - St. Peter's Basilica.  Here is the interior, which is gorgeous in an over-the-top kinda way. :)

Italy - Interior of St. Peter's Basilica, Rome

And here is a rather unique view of the exterior cupola as seen through some sort of a keyhole.  I'd love to know if this is a gate or a door, and where it is located.

Situation Normal

I didn't find any more rogue 2008 postcards when I went to Flickr tonight.  I'm hoping that last night was the end of the strangeness...at least with my Flickr account.  This postcard, however, is pretty strange. :)

The 'Nanas' are a group of sculptures in Hannover, Germany, created by artist Niki de Saint Phalle.  The postcard has a lengthy caption on the back, but it is in German and I don't feel like typing it into an online translator, so I'll let you guess what it says. :)   I received this card from Postcrosser Maja05.

Monday, May 23, 2011

Ok, I'm Confused...

When I'm trying to decide which card or cards to post, I go into the Flickr Organizer and sort to show only private content with the tag 'postcard'.  (I keep all my cards private until I blog them.)  The cards are automatically sorted by date posted.  I know with absolute certainty that over the past few days, there were NO MORE cards with 2008 dates on them in the list.  And yet....for some reason, when I went through my usual routine tonight, the two cards at the very end of the list had 2008 dates on them.  WHAAAAAAT??!!??  I checked to see if maybe I had already posted them and just forgot to change the settings to public.  But nope, it doesn't look like I ever posted them.  Why they just showed up in my list now is a complete mystery to me.  Maybe someone at Flickr is messing with me.  Ryan, you don't have any connections with anyone there, do you?? :)

Anyway, here are the two cards, which are completely unrelated in except for the fact they I haven't blogged them yet.  This is the one and only card I've ever received from Delaware.

USA US-213900 received 07-21-2008

The caption on the back of this card says:  "Majestically towering skyward are buildings located in the heart of Wilmington."  Ummm, really?  *snicker*  I've searched and searched this picture, but I still can't find the buildings that are 'towering'. :)  I did a search to see what the tallest building in Wilmington is, and found that it is the Chase Manhattan Centre.  It is 330 ft. tall.  For comparison, here is a list of the 72 tallest buildings in Chicago.  The SHORTEST building on this list is 550 ft. tall. So forgive my cynicism, but there are no towering buildings in Wilmington. :D  By the way, Postcrosser hippocampe sent the card to me, and almost wrote a novel on the back of it.  Seriously, she just squeezed my address in on the lower right.

On the other hand, Sacajawea's message on this card was short and sweet.

Unfortunately there are no amusing captions on the back of this card.  But pop quiz - can anyone identify which country this card is from just by the flags?  I'll give you a hint....it's Sweden.  Wait, that may be more than a hint.  Sorry! ;)

Ok, that's absolutely, positively the last of the 2008 cards.  Probably....

Rocks

I don't really have anything to talk about tonight.  Yeah, I know what you're thinking.  "You don't have anything to talk about most nights."  Ok, I'll give you that.  But tonight I'm actually admitting it.  So I decided to find two cards that had something in common.  *Time out to clean up cat puke....gross*  Anyway, I picked two cards that are geologically interesting.

USA US-313501 received 01-02-2009

It's kind of hard to see, but there is a caption in the upper right corner that says "Jungle Room, Meramec Caverns".  Meramec Caverns is in Stanton, Missouri.  Postcrosser aone404 sent this card to me.

And here is one of the more famous mountains in Colorado - Pikes Peak.

USA US-331806 received 01-29-2009

The red rock formations in the foreground are part of the Garden of the Gods.  This card is courtesy of poohgck.

Still Here

So, the world didn't end.  What a SHOCK!!!  (Where is that sarcasm font when you need it??)  I'm glad that it didn't, because I made an error last night, and now I have the chance to correct it.  :)  I told you that last night's cards were my last 3 from 2008.  That was a lie.  I was going by the dates that I uploaded the cards to Flickr.  But if I look at the dates that I actually received the cards, this is actually the last official Postcrossing card that I received in 2008.

Singapore SG-13260 received 12-29-2008

This rather unique-looking building is the Theatres on the Bay on the Esplanade in Singapore (as I'm sure you figured out if you read the caption).  The two aluminum domes remind me of bug eyes.  :)  This was the second official Postcrossing card sent by skyoflove.

So now that is the last card of 2008.  *crossing fingers*  I now move on to the first official Postcrossing card of 2009.

Germany DE-260879 received 01-02-2009

As you can see by the large crease down the middle, this poor card received some abuse from the postal system.  You might think that it is from the Netherlands because of the windmill, but actually Uelsen is in Germany.  However, according to escuco, the sender, it is near the Dutch border.

See you all tomorrow night, since it seems that we will all still be here. :)

So Long, Farewell!

This could very well be my last blog post.  I mean, the world is supposed to end tomorrow, right? :)  It's sad...I have so many more great cards to post.  Oh well, at least I can post the last three cards from 2008 (not counting the two Christmas cards).

Israel - The Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem

As the card states, this is the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Israel.  I supposed I could have posted this card around Christmas at well, but since there may not be another Christmas, I posted it now. ;)  I received it as part of a swap with Postcrosser Leeba.

This one is also from Leeba, but I received it as part of the '12 Viewcards in an Envelope' round robin.

I was surprised to read that the Sea of Galilee, also in Israel, is not really a 'sea', but actually a freshwater lake.

Ok, switching gears now...I just realized that if the world ends tomorrow, the world will never get to see part 2 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  I just rented part one from Netflix.  Hopefully I'll have time to watch it before the Rapture starts. *snicker* But right now, let's take a trip down memory lane, all the way back to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone from 2001.

USA US-295857 received 11-26-2008

Gosh, what a baby he was!  :D  I received this card as an official Postcrossing card from Lisa1, who lived in Georgia.

Ok, so that's it.  Thank you all for reading my inane blather night after night and for your comments...well, except yours, Ryan. :P  Goodbye, everyone!!

I, man, am regal; a German am I

The title of this post may seem a little odd.  But if you look at it carefully, you may notice something about it.  It's a palindrome.  For those of you who just said "A what?", a palindrome is a word or phrase that reads the same backwards as it does forwards.  I chose this particular palindrome for two reasons.  The first is that tonight's card is from Germany.  The second is that the Postcrossing ID number on the card is a palindrome: 249942.  Once again, I remind you that I am a geek with a thing for numbers. :)

Germany DE-249942 received 12-11-2008

Another

It's another postcard of Finland.  And another postcard of a lake at that.  There seems to be a lot of lakes in Finland.

Finland FI-293449 (Card #2)

This is also another "second card".  I misplaced the first card that Postcrosser Minri sent to me, so she sent a second card.  By the time I received this card, though, I had found the first card and registered it.  Oh well, it happens. :)

Just the Facts

My brain's not working very well right now, so I'll just get right to the point and not try to be clever. This is the Sintra National Palace in Sintra, Portugal.  I received the card from Postcrosser verajs.

Yes, that's it.  You're dismissed.

It's a Party

No, I don't actually have anything to celebrate.  But it looks like a party is going on here.

Netherlands NL-95772 received 08-26-2008

Postcrosser lindah from the Netherlands sent this card to me.  She was surprised that one of my requests is for food postcards.  I told her that everyone eats, and that I was interested in seeing what people eat in other parts of the world.

Grrrrr!

I watched the Survivor finale tonight.  I don't want to talk about it.  Except to remind people to NOT POST SPOILERS on Facebook.  I was on the phone with my mom at the time the winner was announced, so I wasn't watching it.  I went online to looks something up for her, and then without even thinking about it, I went to Facebook.  The first thing I saw was one of my FB friends cheering for the winner.  GAH!  I'm disappointed in the winner either way, but I would have at least liked to have a little bit of hope as I was watching Jeff Probst reading the votes.  *sigh*

So, now that I've gotten that out of my system, here's a postcard from Spain.

Parque Nacional del Teide translates to Teide National Park.  I didn't even have to look that up. :)  It's a good thing that I know a little bit of Spanish, because Postcrosser garagurb wrote the entire message on the back in Spanish.  Parque Nacional del Teide is on the island of Tenerife, which is one of the Canary Islands (Islas Canarias).  It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

It Still Counts!

I was just about to go to bed at around 2 AM Sunday morning when I remembered that I hadn't written Saturday's blog entry.  But since I haven't gone to bed yet, I think this still counts for Saturday.  Yup, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Just a little bit of computer trickery and.....TA-DA!  The date at the top of the post says Saturday. ;)

I picked this card out from my Flickr photostream, and then it took me a while to find the actual card.  It wasn't in with the 4x6 cards, and it wasn't in with the 5x7 cards.  That only left the oversized cards.  I had forgotten that it was panoramic.

Taiwan TW-5899 received 01-11-2008

I tried rescanning this card at a higher resolution to get rid of those vertical stripes that show up on the image.  It's better than it was, but the lines are still there and they really annoy me.  Oh well, it is still a pretty view of the Penghu region of Taiwan, and I have Postcrosser nakashima to thank for that.  The stamp is cute too...it shows a Himalayan cat.  :)

Blame it on Blogger!

I'm sure many of you already know that Blogger had some major issues yesterday, and the site was down for maintenance until some time this morning.  I think their Friday the 13th bad luck started a little early.  So anyway, that is why I didn't post anything last night.  It was actually kind of nice not to have to worry about it for once. :)  But I think I'll  post an extra card or two tonight to make up for it.

I realized that I only have 14 cards from 2008 left to post.  14!!!  No, I'm not going to post all of them tonight. :D  In fact, I'll probably wait to post two of them until December because they are Christmas cards.  So that really only leaves 12 cards.  Don't worry, I'm not running out of postcards.  I have over 600 card from 2009-present that you haven't seen yet.

I just picked a mish-mash of cards tonight.  This first one is actually an advertisement from the Clinton County Convention & Visitors Bureau in Clinton County, Ohio.  I have no idea how they got my address...at work no less...but hey, a postcard is a postcard! :)
.
Ohio - Clinton County Ad

Here is a multiview card of Bytów, Poland that was sent by Postcrosser Kasia_Musial.  It looks like a pretty area of the world.  And I like the way the photos are separated...it's more visually interesting than just straight lines.

Finally, we have a movie card from yet another movie I have not seen. :)  It was the very first Postcrossing card that Liesje75 (from the Netherlands) ever sent.

Netherlands NL-82448 received 06-17-2008

I decided to post this one because Colin Farrell was on the Ellen Degeneres Show today, promoting Fright Night.  The funny thing is that Fright Night won't be released until August (WHAAAAT?).  I don't normally like films in the horror genre, but David Tennant is in it, so I might just have to see it. :D~~  Yes, that is me drooling.  I'd better go now before I short out my laptop.

Two Hundred

Yes, this is my 200th blog post.  If you wonder why I keep pointing out these milestones, it's because I'm an accountant and I like numbers. :)  I doubt that anyone has read all 200 posts, but if you have, I have just one thing to say.  I'm sorry.  In more ways than one. ;)  Hopefully this postcard makes up for it, at least a little bit.

Finland FI-339819 received 08-21-2008

Obviously, this is a time lapse photo, and it shows Leivonmäki National Park in Finland.  Either that, or it's an alien invasion...take your pick. :)  The card was sent by Postcrosser Leo, or more precisely, by his mom Jaana, as Leo wasn't yet 6 years old when I received the card.

All Better!

Anakin had his post-surgery follow-up at the vet this evening.  They took out his stitches and everything looks great.  Yay!  Now his fur just has to grow back, not only on his face but also on his leg where they shaved him to put the IV in.  :)  I'm hoping that this means that he will not have to go back to the vet until it is time for his annual shots.  I'm sure he's hoping that too.

France FR-39969 received 12-16-2008

On a completely unrelated subject, this postcard is from Postcrosser didieroux2 in France.  I know the top part says something about the sun, but since I don't speak French, I don't know exactly what it says.  But let's see....it's sunny and there's a beach.  Definitely doesn't seem like a place that I would like!

Nodding Off

My blog is practically putting ME to sleep tonight.  I have my eyes propped open with toothpicks just to write this.  I'd show you a picture, but I'm writing this on my desktop and it doesn't have a webcam.  So you'll just have to believe me.  You DO believe me, right?? :)

I didn't really feel like searching through my postcard boxes to find a specific card, so I just grabbed one that was towards the front of a box.

My parents sent this to me when they took a trip to Alaska in August of 2010.  They had a week of land tours before getting on a cruise ship, and Fairbanks was one of their stops on the land portion.  I thought this card was kind of funny - I see the paddle-wheel river boat and think of the Mississippi River, not Alaska. But this boat does indeed give tours of the Chena and Tanana Rivers in Fairbanks.

Home Again

I got home about 9:00 this evening, at which point I had to watch the two hour finale of The Amazing Race.  After all, I couldn't risk seeing a spoiler about who won, right?  Unfortunately, I was not that happy with the outcome, but at least now I know.  And I am really tired now and just want to go to bed.  But first, here's a postcard.

I'm certainly glad that I didn't have to travel to and from Wisconsin in a vehicle like this. :)  As you can see, this is from the Netherlands, and it was sent by Postcrosser coranoot.

Away from Home

For the first time, I am not writing a blog post at home.  I am staying the night at my aunt and uncle's house in Wisconsin so that I will be able to see my mom tomorrow on Mother's Day.  I did plan ahead though.  I picked a card, rescanned it (because the original scan was horrible) and brought it with me.  And here it is.

Namibia ZA-2901 received 06-20-2008 (from South Africa)

While this card does show Namibia, it was actually sent from South Africa - the country directly to the east - by Postcrosser Sandeep.  It's unlikely that I will ever receive an official Postcrossing card from Namibia, because there are only 5 members there, and they have only sent a total of 37 cards.

Duwisib Castle has a bit of an interesting story attached to it.  You can read it here if you are interested.

I Remembered!

I finally remembered what I was going to post about on Wednesday night!  And it only took me two full days. :) Dang it, I'm dumb sometimes!  Actually, what reminded me is that I was responding to a bunch of messages from Postcrossers that I received on Wednesday.  The reason I received those messages is because I renewed my Postcrossing support (which is what I had intended to post about the other day), and my profile was featured on the home page for a while.  A number of people who looked at my profile sent me messages asking if I'd like to swap postcards (yes...duh!).  :)  Oh, and there was one Star Trek fan who liked my profile picture (me as a Vulcan) and told me to "Spock on!"   *lol*

Speaking of postcards swaps, here is a card that I received in a swap with Postcrosser alm74.

Write a Caption

I don't really have much to say about this card, but I'm sure someone can come up with something good.

This is from a 2006 Norwegian movie called "Repriza", which apparently means reprise.  Postcrosser saukedita from Lithuania sent the card to me.

Umm...What was I Going to Say?

I know I thought of something to write earlier, but now that I'm actually sitting down to write it, I can't remember what the heck it was!  Plus I couldn't find a card to post that I didn't have to rescan first.  So basically I'm just annoyed right now.  Oh crap!  I just remembered that I have to remake my bed too.  I came home and found that one of the cats had puked on the bed, so all of the covers had to be washed.  *sigh*  I think I've been spending too much time playing 'Sims Medieval'.  It distracts me from all the stuff I should be doing.  :)

This is a school in Lithuania.  I'm not sure of the exact name or location, as I can't read the captions on the front or the back of the card, and Postcrosser Milagro was not specific.  But she did say that it is like a museum.  Whether that means it is a working school with a museum in it or just a museum, I'm not sure.  So basically, I know nothing tonight.  Hopefully tomorrow night will be better.

Happy Kitty

I think Anakin is a very happy boy tonight.  He kept finding ways to pull back the Elizabethan collar, which pretty much rendered it ineffective, so I took it off of him.  He spent quite a while sitting under the coffee table earlier, bathing himself.  Now he's all curled up on the ottoman with his head upside-down and his paw over his face.  He hasn't been able to sleep like that in a week.  His stitches haven't dissolved yet, and he still has a bit of a scab, so I'll still have to make sure he doesn't scratch anything open.  But I don't think that will be too much of an issue.  *keeping fingers crossed*

Anyway, here's a card that has absolutely nothing to do with any of that.

Seasonal

I haven't really felt well all day, and once again was seriously considering not posting anything, but I just couldn't bring myself to skip it.  Plus I was able to find a couple of cards that I didn't have to rescan, so that made it easy.

Finland FI-350782 received 08-26-2008

I actually have duplicates of this card.  The first time I picked it out of a round robin envelope.  Then I received it as an official Postcrossing card from sarivento.  I just have one question...what is this "spring" season?  It is unfamiliar to me. :)

Finland FI-335388 received 08-05-2008

This lovely summer card was sent by Tanjuska.  Those berries look yummy!  This is from Finland also, by the way.

Taciturn

That's how I'm feeling tonight.

This is the State Historical Museum in Moscow, Russia, and the card was sent to me by Postcrosser BoogaWooga.
