MO and OH

Missouri - Gateway Arch, Saint Louis

Sent by: alcott1 (on Flickr)
From: Illinois
For: Private swap
Notes:  Usually, photos of the Gateway Arch are looking towards the city of St. Louis.  This one, however, is looking across the Mississippi River towards Illinois.

Ohio - Columbus

Sent by: snoopy
From: Ohio
For: Private swap
Notes:  "A reproduction of the Santa Maria, flagship of Christopher Columbus, is docked on the Scioto River north of the Broad Street Bridge in downtown Columbus."  I guessing that since they have a replica of Columbus' ship, Columbus, Ohio is named after Christopher Columbus.

Confusion and Cuteness

Finland FI-547466 received 06-01-2009

Sent by: minicape
From: Finland
ID number: FI-547466
Notes: When received this card, I was quite confused by the sender's note on the back that this card was a combination of zoo and Disney (two of my wishlist items).  I didn't see anything Disney about it.  But then I noticed the lower-left corner.  Apparently it IS indeed a Disney card.  Either that, or someone is going to get into trouble for copyright infringement!  According to minicape, the caption says "Greetings from the domain of Donald Duck".

Finland FI-497544 received 03-16-2009

Sent by: Waliina
From: Finland
ID number: FI-497544
Notes: I received a number of cards of Disney characters like this, because my Postcrossing wishlist mentioned Disney cards.  Of course, I was expecting cards from the Disney theme parks.  I've learned that it helps to be specific. :)  This is an adorable card, though, and Waliina wrote the message so neatly that it almost looks like it was printed rather than written.

Forts and Flags

Sent by: Annaya
From: Philippines
ID number: PH-8583
Notes: The back of this card had one of the longest captions that I have ever seen.  (Click on the picture to read it on Flickr.)  It's mostly about how many times Fort Santiago has been destroyed and rebuilt.  Let's just say that is ALOT.

Sent by: malayangbuwan
From: Philippines
ID number: PH-7725
Notes:  This is one of those unusual cards where the back is vertical as well.  My address is at the top with the message from malayangbuwan below it. That must be acceptable to the postal service, because clearly the card arrived.

Russian Constructions

Sent by: Valj
From: Russia
ID number: RU-38440
Notes: This is the Saint Nicholas Church in the town of Byngi, Russia, which is located in the Urals.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find any more information on it.  The town is apparently too small to have an entry on Wikipedia.

Sent by: natuzzi
From: Russia
For: Museums Around the World Round Robin - Group 4
Notes: As you can see, this is the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg.  It is an art museum, so not a place I'd like to visit, but it is certainly a beautiful building.

Mardi Gras!

Louisiana - Rain on Royal Street, New Orleans

Sent by: Nitrocat (on Atlas Quest)
Notes: Nitrocat was kind enough to send me a couple of postcards when she took a trip to New Orleans.  The most famous Mardi Gras celebration in the USA takes place in New Orleans, although clearly this photo wasn't taken during Mardi Gras.  I somehow don't think a little rain would stop the drunken revelers from partying, do you?

USA US-1517694 received 02-07-2012

Sent by:  otiscjmobu
From: Louisiana, USA
ID number: US-1517694
Notes: What a happy Mardi Gras jester. This is another card that I received very recently.  Again, don't get used to it.  I still have a lot of old cards to get through.

A Sort-Of Holiday

Today is Presidents Day here in the United States.  It is only a day off for government employees, some schools and some bankers, which is why I call it a 'sort-of' holiday.  It's celebrated on the third Monday in February, and officially only commemorates George Washington's birthday, although there has been a push to make it a day honoring all of the Presidents of the United States.

USA US-373094 received 03-27-2009

Sent by: judy64
From: Virginia, USA
ID number: US-373094
Notes: I though this card was appropriate for Presidents Day, especially because it has George Washington on it.  I do find some of the portraits a bit creepy though...especially Madison and Harrison.

Washington, D.C. - The White House

For: US to US Travelling Envelope Round Robin - Flight 1
Notes: I thought that the home of the President of the United States would be appropriate today as well.  Because this card came out of an envelope with a number of cards in it, and anyone who had the card before me could have added it to the envelope, I can't give credit to a specific person.

Super Sunday: Ads

All the posts I wrote for the past week included two postcards.  But since I had so many postcards that I have not yet included in my blog (over 600), I decided to include 4 cards into today's post.  And to make it sound more interesting and important than it really is, I'm calling it "Super Sunday".

Fleur de Lis

Sent by: alenas
From: Italy
For: Ad Cards Round Robin - Group 9
Notes:  alenas included a note on the back of this card, informing me that Eni is an oil and gas company, and this card talks about ways to conserve energy.
This was the only time I participated in anything involving ad cards because I realized that I just don't enjoy ad cards that much, unless they are for movies or TV shows.

Sent by: wackystuff
From: Canada
For: Ad Cards Round Robin - Group 9
Notes:  This card is identical on both sides, so it is not a true postcard.  Akufen is a Canadian electronic musician, and this card is advertising his CD launch party.

Austria - Spanish Riding School, Vienna

Sent by: monsieurvalentine
From: Netherlands
For: Ad Cards Round Robin - Group 9
Notes:  These horses are the famous Lipizzaner stallions from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna Austria. On the back of this card, where the message would normally be written, there is an ad for a performance at the Sportpaleis Antwerpen in Antwerp, Belgium.

Pennsylvania - Colonial Theatre, Phoenixville

Sent by: iSteven
From: Pennsylvania, USA
For: Lottery for Round Robin Hosts
Notes: This was one of about 8 cards that I received from iSteven's lottery.  I thought it fit in well with the other ad cards.  According to the info on the back of the card, the Colonial Theatre, located in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, appeared in the 1958 film "The Blob".

Brown Bridge

Rhode Island - Brown University, Providence

Sent by: CBear214
From: South Dakota
For: Private swap
Notes: CBear214 is from South Dakota, but sent this card to me when I was trying to complete my goal of having a card from every state.  It is still my only card of Rhode Island, and it shows the Van Winkle Gates and Tower at Brown University.

Vermont & New Hampshire - Windsor to Cornish Covered Bridge

Sent by: nowaglas
From: New Mexico
For: Private swap
Notes: As with the Rhode Island card, I received this card when I was trying to complete my 50 states collection.  I do now have other cards from both Vermont and New Hampshire.
This bridge was built in 1866 and is the longest covered bridge in or partly in Vermont.

Duo from Deutschland

Sent by: artjom
From: Germany
ID number: DE-316731
Notes: The is Castle Frankenstein, which was built in the 13th century.  So no, the castle was not named after the character in the novel by Mary Shelley.  It is possible but not confirmed that Mary Shelley named the character after the castle.

From: Germany
For: Take Two Round Robin
Notes: In the Take Two Round Robin, I received an envelope of postcards.  As the name implies, I took two cards out of the envelope (and then put two others in before I sent it on).  This card of the Baltic Sea resort of Warnemünde was one of the two.

This post made me remember why writing a blog every night got so tedious - it's sometimes very difficult to come up with a decent, if not clever, title.  I can't tell you how long I stared at the screen, trying to come up with something i deemed acceptable.

City Mouse, Country Mouse

UK - Piccadilly Circus, London, England

Sent by: Ann, a former coworker
Notes: Ann sent this view of Picadilly Circus in London to the office when she was on vacation in England, but somehow it ended up in my postcard collection.  Hmm, how did that happen?? :)

Sent by: lizbrkljac
From: United Kingdom
For: Landscape Round Robin - Group 7
Notes: This is Crantock Beach as seen from the Crantock Bay Hotel.  The strange mark in the center is a flaw in the postcard from going through the mail.  Or possibly proof of an interdimensional portal.

And yes, I realize that there are no mice visible in these photos.  I was referencing a story

Name's the Same

Washington - Animal Multiview

Sent by: nhigh
From: Washington
For: US to US Alphabetical Tag
Notes: nhigh had to send me a 'W' postcard, and there are a few things on the card that qualify -   Washington, wildlife, wolves.

Washington, D.C. - Lincoln Memorial

Sent by: I'm not quite sure (me and my poor record keeping), but I think it was akindofmagick
From: Maryland
For: Private swap
Notes: The building in the front is the Lincoln Memorial, then the Washington Monument, and the dome of the Capitol Building is visible in the background.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Sent by: Esjuhh
From: Netherlands
ID: NL-761562
Notes: I received this card in September, so it's probably not meant to be a Valentine's card, but I think it fits.  The word 'Love', the feathers on the birds' heads and the arch of dots at the top are all shiny, which doesn't show up very well on the scan.

Happy Valentine's Day

Sent by: Goofy Girl (on Atlas Quest)
For: AQ Valentine's Postcard Tag
Notes: I received this card just last week.  What??  A CURRENT CARD??  Yeah, don't get used to it.

Fountains and Fireworks

I'm going to try a bit of an experiment in order to get this blog going again.  I'm going to try to prepare a number of posts ahead of time and schedule one to post each day.  I hesitated to do that before because I wanted to leave myself open each night to potentially talk about something that happened that day.  But that got REALLY tedious after a number of months, which I why I stopped posting.  So we'll see how this works.   Hopefully for you, the reader, this means more postcards and less inane drivel from me.  You're welcome.
