Notes: The is one of the most famous cathedrals in the world, Notre Dame in Paris.  It was one of the first buildings in the world to have flying buttresses.  Stop snickering, it's a architecture term. :)  The cornerstone of the cathedral was laid in 1163, and construction was finished in 1345.  Several bouts of rioting, including one during the French Revolution, damaged the cathedral, and World War II caused even more damage.  A restoration project was started in 1991, and expected to last 10 years, but was still going as of 2010 (according to Wikipedia).
