Day One Hundred Fifty-Six

Portugal - Fireworks

Notes: This card has nothing written on it, and unfortunately, I didn't make any notations as to who sent it or why I received it.  Oops.  I can't even tell you what the image shows, beyond fireworks over the water, as there is no caption on the card either.

At first glance, it looks like a maxicard, which is a card that a coordinating postage stamp image on the picture side of the card.  In this case, it just looks like stamp with a similar theme to the card's was placed on the front  to make it look like a maxicard.

Notes: Guimarães, in north western Portugal, is known as the place where Portugal was born, which is what it says on the city wall in this photo.  There are several reasons that it might be considered the place where Portugal originated.  It is the birthplace of Alfonso I, the first king of Portugal.  Also, the administrative seat of the County of Portugal was established in Guimarães by Henry of Burgundy.  Finally, the city played a key role in the Battle of São Mamede in 1128, which was important in the formation of Portugal.
