Day Two Hundred Forty-Five

Thailand - Viewpoint Kata-Karon,  Phuket

Sent by: Thamonwan
From: Thailand
For: Private swap
Notes: Kata and Karon are two of the beaches shown in this photo.  They are located in the Phuket province, in south western Thailand.  All of the beaches in the area suffered major damage during the 2004 tsunami caused by the earthquake in the Indian Ocean.  Fortunately, the area has recovered and is once again popular with tourists.

Day Two Hundred Forty-Four

Time Machine

Sent by: wackystuff
From: Canada
For: Ad Card Round Robin - Group 9
Notes: It's not a TARDIS or a Delorean, but it is a Time Machine.  In this case, it seems that the Time Machine was a festival of sorts with a bunch of DJs playing music.  At least, that is what I gathered from the information on the back of the card, which is partially in French.  It's not a true postcard, because there is no room on the back for an address or stamps - it's totally covered with information about Time Machine.

Day Two Hundred Forty-Three

Thailand - The Royal Barge, Bangkok

Sent by: Thamonwan
From: Thailand
For: Private swap
Notes: This is the Royal Barge Suphannahong.  It is used in Royal Barge Processions, ceremonies of both religious and royal significance that have been taking place for over 700 years.  There have been 16 Royal Barge Processions during the reign of the current king, Bhumibol Adulyadej.  The first was May 14, 1957, nearly eleven years after he became king, and the most recent was November 9th, 2012.  As I was reading about King Bhumibol, I found it interesting that he was actually born in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  His father, the king's brother,  was enrolled in the Public Health Program at Harvard at the time.

Day Two Hundred Forty-Two

REM, 1994

Sent by: iSteven
From: Pennsylvania, USA
For: Lottery for Round Robin Hosts
Notes: I received this card, along with several others, as part of a lottery that I entered and won on the Postcrossing forum, which is separate from the main Postcrossing site.  At the time, I was hosting several Round Robins on the forum, but have since passed those hosting duties on to others.  The card shows the members of the band R.E.M., as they looked in 1994.

Day Two Hundred Forty-One

Thailand TH-65936 received 02-24-2011

Sent by: swimmergirl
From: Thailand
ID number: TH-65936
Notes: Besides sounding like something a kid would say after you ask them to do something, Wat Pho is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok.  It is also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, probably because it has a very large statue of a reclining Buddha inside.  It is one of the oldest wats in Thailand, having been founded in 1781, and also one of the largest.  The Buddha statue is about 50 feet (15 m) high and 141 feet (43 m) long).

Day Two Hundred Forty

Unidentified Ad Card from Finland

Sent by: alenas
From: Finland
For: Ad Cards Round Robin - Group 9
Notes: I'm not exactly sure what this card is for.  I went to the website, but unfortunately Google Chrome won't translate most of it.  It seems to have something to do with brewers and soft drink manufacturers.  The checkboxes on the front of the card say "Cool?" and "Embarrassing?", and the caption below that approximately translates to "Take part in the competition to win the new clean jeans".

Germany DE-662678 received 08-11-2010

Sent by: annemi15
From: Germany
ID number: DE-662678
Notes: This is another ad card, but at least this time I was able to figure out that it is for SIX Stores, which seem to sell women's jewelry and accessories.  There are SIX stores in many countries, including 10 in the United States.  Interesting that there is a store in Indianapolis, but not in Chicago.  The sender is from Germany, but she picked this card up while on a visit to Paris.

Day Two Hundred Thirty-Nine

Taiwan TW-35061 received 03-03-2009

Sent by: Yoru
From: Taiwain
ID number: TW-35061
Notes: This is Sun Moon Lake, which was also on the card featured on October 13th.  This is actually not a postcard, but rather a folded greeting-type card.  However, it did not come in an envelope.  There is a spot for the address and stamps on the back, and the card was sealed with a silver sticker, which you can see at the top of the card.

Thailand TH-69051 received 04-02-2011

Sent by: iamnuchy
From: Thailand
ID number: TH-69051
Notes: Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, is a Buddhist temple on the west bank of the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok, Thailand.  The temple's name derives from the Hindu god Aruna, who is often personified as radiations of the rising sun.  The temple itself was built in the 1600s, but the spires around it were not built until the 19th century. I find it interesting that this is the Temple of Dawn, and yet the card shows the sun setting (according to the caption on the back of the card).

Day Two Hundred Thirty-Eight

Russia RU-555046 received 09-19-2011

Sent by: scheee
From: Krasnogosk, Russia
ID number: RU-555046
Notes: The little yellow ball smiling at the bear is Kolobok.  Kolobok is a pastry who became animated and ran away from his parents (or possibly grandparents).  Along the way, he encountered a bear, a rabbit, and a wolf who all wanted to eat him, but he outsmarted all of them and sang about it.  He finally encountered a fox, who praised Kolobok's singing, distracting Kolobok and allowing the fox to catch and eat him.  Not a very pleasant fairy tale, but then again, not many of them are!!

Day Two Hundred Thirty-Seven

Taiwan TW-66940 received 07-15-2009

Sent by: blueleaves
From: Taiwan
ID number: TW-66940
Notes: The caption on the back of this card says "Taipei residents are inspired and touched by various art performances."  So obviously this mask is part of an art performance.  Other than that, I have no other information.

Day Two Hundred Thirty-Six

Knick Knack

Sent by: Goofy Girl
From: Oklahoma, USA
Notes: Do you want to a snowman?  In 1989, six years before the release of Toy Story, that's exactly what Pixar was doing.  It was Pixar's fifth short film, and featured a snowman figurine struggling to get out of his snowglobe in order to be able to interact with the other knick knacks on the shelf.  It's just over three minutes long, and can be watched here.

Day Two Hundred Thirty-Five

Taiwan TW-78460 received 09-12-2009

Sent by: ChiaoruShiu
From: Taiwan
ID number: TW-78460
Notes: The sender told me that An-Ping is a small town in Tainan county in the south of Taiwan, but didn't tell me specifically what this site is.  When I looked up An-Ping (or Anping, as it appears on Wikipedia), I found that is a fort there.  It was originally called Fort Zeelandia, but is now called Anping Fort.  I'd bet that the cannons shown here are at that fort, which was built between 1624 and 1634 by the Dutch East India Company.

Day Two Hundred Thirty-Four

China CN-253360 received 09-16-2010

Sent by: tacitus
From: China
ID number: CN-253360
Notes: Peking or Beijing opera is a traditional form of Chinese theater.  It not only involves singing, but also mime, dance and acrobatics.  It arose as an art form in the late 18th century, and was fully developed as an art form by the mid 19th century.  In recent years, audience numbers have declined, which has led to some reforms such as performing new and original plays.

Day Two Hundred Thirty-Three

Taiwan TW-75381 received 08-20-2009

Sent by: chequer543
From: Taipei, Taiwan
ID number: TW-75381
Notes:  Well, the only thing in English on this card says "Welcome to Kinmen", so I'm not sure what this specific location is (some sort of fort?), but I do know it is part of the Kinmen archipelago.  Because it is so close to mainland China, Kinmen's major industry is tourism.  Fishing and the production of Kaoliang liquor are also big industries.

Taiwan TW-76301 received 08-18-2009

Sent by: russiaanxylo
From: Taipei, Taiwan
ID number: TW-76301
Notes: This is the National Palace Museum in Taipei. It has a collection of nearly 700,000 ancient Chinese imperial artifacts and artworks, which were originally housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing's Forbidden City.  However, advancements by the Japanese in WWII prompted the Chinese to move the artifacts out of Beijing.  After the Japanese surrendered, the Chinese Civil War resumed, prompting Chiang Kai-shek to evacuate the artifacts to Taiwan.  Today, the museum has 4.5 million visitors annually, ranking it the 7th most visited art museum in the world.

Day Two Hundred Thirty-Two

USA US-775212 received 08-07-2010

Sent by: hypostomus
From: Bridgeport, CT, USA
ID number: US-775212
Notes: I don't know about you, but it looks to me like that guy and his dog might be in a bit of trouble!  The sender picked this card for me because she didn't have any cards that matched my request list, but one of my requests is cards from aquariums, and what do you see in aquariums?  No, not dogs.  Fish!

USA US-1202973 received 07-22-2011

Sent by: postcardsss
From: Martinsburg, WV, USA
ID number: US-1202973
Notes: I'm sure you know that I geek a lot of things.  If you didn't know that, there are plenty of hints all over this blog.  I also like to read, and this card is an ad for, so I think it all ties together rather well.

Day Two Hundred Thirty-One

Taiwan TW-76551 received 09-03-2009

Sent by: shiya
From: Taiwan
ID number: TW-76551
Notes: I tried to see if those faint words at the bottom of the card had anything to do with the name of this temple, but I wasn't able to connect them.  The sender simply said that it is a Taiwanese temple, so that doesn't help me much either.  I'm sure that there are quite a few temples in Taiwan.

Day Two Hundred Thirty

Lithuania LT-105701 received 01-31-2011

Sent by: jtu
From: Lithuania
ID number: LT-105701
Notes: Winter is coming.  Yeah, this card has nothing to do with Game of Thrones but everything to do with the season.  Fortunately, we have not yet had any snow around here, although it has been known to happen in October.  I just hope that this coming winter isn't quite as snowy as last winter.

The snowflakes falling from the sky and the snow along the fence on this card are both glittery.  Unfortunately, that doesn't show up very well here.

Day Two Hundred Twenty-Nine

Taiwan TW-146068 received 05-10-2010

Sent by: mongjulee
From: Taiwan
ID number: TW-146068
Notes: I can tell you that this is a river in Taiwan with a bunch of boats in it.  That's about all I can tell you, as the card does not say which river or which city this is. So, um, yeah.  That's all, folks!

Day Two Hundred Twenty-Eight

Germany DE-838412 received 02-22-2011

Sent by: Amarilfily
From: Germany
ID number: DE-838412
Notes: Ok, this is clearly a case of puppy-dog eyes.  Seriously, has this pup been taking lessons from Puss in Boots?  He could be Pooch in Boots.  Hmmmm...nah.

Day Two Hundred Twenty-Seven

Taiwan TW-127103 received 03-18-2010

Sent by: ZoeChang
From: Taiwan
ID number: TW-127103
Notes: Sun Moon Lake is the largest body of water in Taiwan, with an area of 3.06 square miles.  It is named because the east side of the lake resembles the sun while the west side of the lake resembles a moon.  That island in the middle of the lake is called Lalu.  I know there must be some reason that those boats are strung together like that, but I really can't fathom what it would be, especially as there is no nearby dock to get to them.

Day Two Hundred Twenty-Six

New Zealand NZ-53520 received 06-16-2011

Sent by: AnotherSarah
From: Auckland, New Zealand
ID number: NZ-53520
Notes: This card shows the cover of Detective Comics issue #359, released on January 1, 1967.  As it says, it was the debut of a new Batgirl - in this case, Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Police Commissioner Gordon.  I have never been a Batman fan (or a fan of DC Comics characters in general).  In fact, the only Batman movie I've ever seen is Batman and Robin, starring George Clooney as Bruce Wayne/Batman.  I never had an interest in seeing any of the others.

I'd Better Call You Back

Sent by: Green Tortuga
From: Seattle, WA, USA
Notes: Whereas the previous card was from a comic book, this card is just comic (of, pertaining to, or characterized by comedy).  My friend Ryan sent it to me after he found out that I had to sit on a jury.  The trial, which only lasted 2 days, involved a car accident; hence the card.  He sent the card while he was hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 2010.  He started at the Mexican border, hiked through California, Oregon and Washington before ending up at the Canadian border.  (You can read about this hike or any of his other through-hikes on his blog.)  Based on the postmark, this card was send from Timberline Lodge, Oregon.

Day Two Hundred Twenty-Five

Taiwan TW-370470 received 10-14-2011

Sent by: alittlemai
From: Taiwan
ID number: TW-370478
Notes: The Taiwan Salt Museum is a museumall about...wait for it...salt!  I bet you never would have guessed that.  There is an actual museum building - it's just not shown in this photo.  The museum is located in the Qigu district in western Taiwan, in what was once a huge salt-producing district.  Based on what alittlemai said, it would seem that they would use the sun to evaporate sea water, leaving the salt behind.

Taiwan TW-275323 received 03-29-2011

Sent by: Black_Sweet
From: Taiwan
ID number: TW-275323
Notes: This is the Red House in Taipei City, Taiwan.  Since you probably want to know more that what the front of the card already says, I will tell you that it is a theater.  It was built in 1908 when Taiwan was under Japanese rule, and at that time, it was used as a market.  It became a theater in 1945.

USA US-804315 received 08-30-2010

Sent by: slogsdon
From: Nashville, Tennessee, USA
ID number: US-804315
Notes: Some of you may recognize this man, but I'm sure even more of you would recognize him if he was a bit older, with a bushy white mustache and wild white hair.  Know who he is now?  It's Albert Einstein, as he appeared in the mid 1920s.  He was born in 1879, so he would be in his mid 40s in this photo.

Day Two Hundred Twenty-One

Taiwan TW-136144 received 04-10-2010

Sent by: a3324425
From: Taiwan
ID number: TW-136144
Notes: The caption on this card is mostly indecipherable to me, as it involves Chinese or Taiwanese charaters (I'm not even sure which).  The one part that is is in English says "Games of the Mist".  I Googled that (ok, not really - I use Yahoo) and realized that it must be a series of Taiwanese postcards showing misty locations.  Here are two examples (each word has a different link).

Sent by: bika
From: Germany
ID number: DE-8300198
Notes: Well, hello there pretty kitty!  The cat's name is Juelli.  I know that because the sender, bika, took this photo of her cat and made it into a postcard.  Juelli is a Norwegian forest cat, and she is laying in bika's garden in this photo.  Lovely!

Switzerland CH-75117 received 04-11-2011

Sent by: Grigeli
From: Switzerland
ID number: CH-75117
Notes: This adorable creature is a red-ruffed lemur.  Like all lemurs, they are native to Madagascar.  This one, however, lives at the Zürich Zoologischer Garten in Zürich, Switzerland.  The zoo has over 300 animal species, and is known for its daily penguin parade (when the temperature is below 10 degrees celcius).

Day Two Hundred Eighteen

Hong Kong HK-22670 received 11-24-2010

Sent by: Treefern2
From: Hong Kong
ID number: HK-22670
Notes: The caption on the back of the card says "Lions Playing A Ball".  I guess if you kinda squint and tilt your, they still don't look like lions.  But still, they look more like lions than anything I could draw!

Taiwan TW-289438 received 10-17-2011

Sent by: COOKIE520
From: Taiwan
ID number: TW-289438
Notes: In case you can't read it, the card says "Mailbox is a metal box in a public place where you put letters and packets to be collected.  They are then sorted and delivered."  They say you learn something new everyday, but I can't say I learned anything new from that. ;)

Sweden MY-27554 received 10-10-2009

Sent by: lady_traveler
From: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
ID number: MY-27554
Notes: This is the Oscar Fredrik Church in Gothenburg, Sweden.  It was built in the 1890s and named after King Oscar II.  I'm not quite sure why I received a card showing a church in Sweden from a sender in Malaysia.  It always baffles me when people send cards showing other countries.  I'd rather see the country the sender is from.

Day Two Hundred Sixteen

Ukraine UA-22792 received 03-15-2010

Sent by: TaliNa
From: Ukraine
ID number: UA-22792
Notes: As you may be able to read, the translation of the caption on the card says "Oh my god! I fell in love!"  The translation isn't the only alteration the sender made to the card.  See that red star?  Yeah, that's a sticker. ;)   TaliNa said that she sent this card to me because the woman's hairstyle reminded her of my Postcrossing avatar (which is a computer-generated image of me as a Vulcan).

Day Two Hundred Fifteen

Spain - Palacia de la Magdalena, Santander

Sent by: MarioGV
From: Spain
For: Private swap
Notes: Construction on the Palacio de la Magdalena began in 1908 by the local government of Santander with the purpose of building a seasonal residence for the royal family.  In 1977, the palace was sold back to the city of Santander, and it was declared a historical monument in 1982.  Today, it is used as a conference and meeting hall.
