Day Two Hundred Seventy-Five

UK GB-203710 received 02-22-2011

Sent by: herbalholly
From: England, United Kingdom
ID number: GB-203710
Notes: Exeter is located in the county of Devon in south west England.  This card shows the city's Quay, and the Custom House, which is the oldest surviving brick building in the city.  The Quay used to be a big shipping port, but after the railroad reached Exeter in the 1840s, shipping to the Quay began to decline.  Now it is used exclusively for leisure.

Sent by: Duplevista
From: England, United Kingdom
For: Private Trade
Notes: I received this card way back in 2007, but I didn't see that I had ever blogged it before.  So here it is.  The photo on the left is actually slightly mislabled.  Big Ben is NOT the name of the tower.  It is the name of the bell inside the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster.  As of 2012, the tower is officially known as the Elizabeth Tower, in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.  The Tower Bridge, named because of its proximity to the Tower of London, was built between 1886 and 1894.  It is a combination of a suspension bridge and a bascule (draw) bridge.

Day Two Hundred Seventy-Four

Finland FI-1159896 received 08-06-2011

Sent by: cranberry
From: Finland
ID number: FI-1159896
Notes: The Åland Islands are an archipelago in the Baltic Sea off the eastern coast of Finland.  Although the islands belong to Finland, Swedish is the predominant language.  According to cranberry, these pancakes are one of the specialties of the island.  They do sound interesting, and would probably be pretty tasty.  I'm not sure about the prune soup mentioned at the end of the recipe though.  Could that be the same as stewed prunes?  If anyone makes the pancake recipe, let me know how it is.

Lithuania LT-144062 received 09-20-2011

Sent by: gitamaja
From: Lithuania
ID number: LT-144062
Notes: The caption at the bottom of the card says "It's never to late to learn."  Not sure exactly what we should be learning from grapes.  Unfortunately, grapes are a fruit that I just don't like.  It's a texture thing more than a taste thing - I don't like how they squish when you bite into them.  I can't eat cherry/grape tomatoes for the same reason.  It just gives me the willies.  I'm not a fan of raisins or wine either.  So I'm basically the grape industry's least favorite person. Oh well.

Day Two Hundred Seventy-Three

UK GB-130042 received 04-02-2010

Sent by: MizzBloor
From: England, United Kingdom
ID number: GB-130042
Notes: Oxford is a historic university city (I bet you never would have guessed that, right?) located 50 miles (80 km) northwest of London.  This card shows (from l-r): Christ Church, The Sheldonian Theatre and the Bridge of Sighs (Hertford Bridge) on the top row, and Radcliffe Camera, the Examination Schools, and Folly Bridge on the bottom row.  Christ Church, a college associated with the University of Oxford, was founded in 1546, making it the oldest of the structures shown.

Day Two Hundred Seventy-Two

France FR-96820 received 06-05-2010

Sent by: pjube
From: France
ID number: FR-96820
Notes: If you are reading this the day it was posted, and you live in the USA, chances are you are now recovering from eating a large Thanksgiving feast.  Perhaps it is now time for dessert.  While I LOVE pumpkin pie, I know some people don't like it (weirdos).  So maybe those people might like this - a cherry clafoutis.  It looks sort of like a pie, right?  The back of the card even has the recipe on it, although it doesn't do me much good as it is all in French.  I think I'll stick to the pumpkin pie.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Day Two Hundred Seventy-One

United Kingdom GB-127884 received 03-22-2010

Sent by: PinkPaisley
From: England, United Kingdom
ID number: GB-127884
Notes: This is the market town of Hitchin in Hertforshire, England. It is about 35 minutes north of London by train, according to PinkPaisley.  She mentioned that she is a geocacher, but has found several letterboxes and stamped in with her PinkPaisley stamp.  I wonder if she uses a pink ink pad??

Day Two Hundred Seventy

Norway - Mack-øl Beer

Sent by: Fnatten
From: Norway
For: Private swap
Notes: I am not a beer drinker (blech!), so I have no idea if this beer would be a good pairing with this salad.  I would probably eat that salad though.  I do like shrimp.  Seems that based on the number of forks, there is another course after the salad.  I wonder what it is?

Day Two Hundred Sixty-Nine

UK GB-168024 received 09-17-2010

From: England, United Kingdom
ID number: GB-168024
Notes: Exeter Cathedral is located in the city of Exeter (big surprise there) in south west England.  The building was completed around the year 1400, and it features the longest uninterrupted vaulted ceiling in England, at around 315 feet (96 m) long.  The cathedral also features an astronomical clock, which dates from about 1484, and is thought to be the inspiration for the nursery rhyme "Hickory Dickory Dock".

Day Two Hundred Sixty-Eight

Finland FI-1168094 received 08-15-2011

Sent by: LeilaR
From: Finland
ID number: FI-1168094
Notes: These are Vaccinium vitis-idaea.  They are also known as whortleberries, cowberries, or, more commonly here in the U.S., lingonberries.  They grow on evergreen shrubs, and are native to the boreal forests and Arctic tundra throughout Eurasia and North America.  LeilaR said that in Finland, they used them to make jams and pies (mmmmm, pie), and they also eat them with meat.

Ukraine UA-61019 received 02-12-2011

Sent by: hope_clearwater
From: Ukraine
ID number: UA-61019
Notes: It seems to me that a dirigible half full of vodka would actually have a hard time staying in the air.  But what do I know?  According to hope_clearwater, the caption on the front says "When I drink vodka, I will fly up to the sky, on with wonderful dirigible.  I am not afraid either of bullets or of a sword!"  Yeah, that's what happens when you drink too much (or so I've heard).

Day Two Hundred Sixty-Seven

UK - Autherley Junction

Sent by: ry22
From: United Kingdom
For: UK/Ireland to the World Tag
Notes: The caption on the back of this card says "Autherley Junction where the Shropshire Union Canal leaves the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal".  It is located in the West Midlands, in west central England.  The boat in the background is next to the stop lock, which prevents water from passing between the two canals.

UK - Carradale Bay and the Isle of Arran, Argyll, Scotland

For: 12 Viewcards in an Envelope Round Robin - Group 145
Notes: Here you can see Carradale Bay and the Isle of Arran.  The isle is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde, off of the west coast of Scotland. Arran has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years, and currently has a population of about 4,600 people.  The main industry is tourism, as the island features a castle, a resort and a number of golf courses.

Day Two Hundred Sixty-Six

China CN-124459 received 11-02-2009

Sent by: Trojan
From: China
ID number: CN-124459
Notes: The caption on the back of this card says "Astonomy and mathematics".  I'm not sure what the main object on the card is, but I think it might be some sort of ancient sextant.  And of course the object on the lower right is an abacus.  Trojan sent this card to me because she knows I like science museums (I volunteer at one!) and she likes them too.

FYI, the number of days that I have left in order to post every day for a year is now in the double digits.  I'm getting there!

Day Two Hundred Sixty-Five

UK GB-214881 received 04-14-2011

Sent by: killercactus17
From: Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
ID number: GB-214881
Notes: Hilllsborough Castle, located in the Northern Ireland village of Hillsborough, was built in the 18th century as a private residence.  In 1922, it was purchased by the British Goverment as a residence for the governor of Northern Ireland.  That position was abolished in 1973, and the Castle then became the home of the Secretary of State.  The Royal Family also stays there while in Northern Ireland, as do other prominent guests.

Day Two Hundred Sixty-Four

Netherlands NL-737181 received 08-19-2011

Sent by: evd
From: Netherlands
ID number: NL-737181
Notes: The caption on the card translates to "I would like to eat a biscuit with you."  The type of biscuits shown are typically eaten for breakfast, and by saying you'd like to eat them with someone basically means you want to spend the night with them.  So there you go, now you know a Dutch pick-up line.

Day Two Hundred Sixty-Three

Ukraine UA-204647 received 02-10-2012

Sent by: ToniaTonia
From: Ukraine
ID number: UA-204647
Notes: The only word I was able to decipher from the caption at the bottom of the card was truppenspital, which I believe means military hospital. The only thing the sender wrote about it was that this is a ancient view of her native city.  So now you know as much about it as I do.

Day Two Hundred Sixty-Two

Giant-Size X-Men #1

Sent by: AmoebaAlex
From: Oklahoma, USA
For: Private swap
Notes: Giant-Sixe X-Men #1 was released in February, 1975 (with a May date), as was the first new X-Men story in five years.  It serves as a link between the original X-Men and a new team.  I'm not quite sure why the card cuts off the top of the cover.  You can see the entire cover here.

Day Two Hundred Sixty-One

Ukraine UA-23328 received 03-31-2010

Sent by: jane-u
From: Ukraine
ID number: UA-23328
Notes: Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the subject of this monument in Kiev, was the Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (now part of Ukraine).  Now if you are a bit confused by that sentence, you are not alone.  I took it straight off of Wikipedia and had to read parts of three other Wikipedia entries to figure out that it basically means he was the head of state.  He was in power from 1648 until his death in 1657.

Ukraine UA-125956 received 09-12-2011

Sent by: Lumotar
From: Ukraine
ID number: UA-125956
Notes: Olesko Castle is an oval-shaped castle located in western Ukraine.  The first record of the castle's existence is from 1390 when Pope Boniface IX gave the castle to a Catholic bishop as a gift.  If anyone would like to give me a castle as a gift, I will take it.  I prefer this one, just in case you were wondering.

Day Two Hundred Sixty

Taiwan TW-281062 received 04-15-2011

Sent by: EmmaHuang
From: Taiwan
ID number: TW-281062
Notes: There isn't much I can say about this very nice drawing of a train.  The captions on the back of the card in what I'm guessing is Chinese, which I have no hope of translating. The sender's entire message was about the TV show House, which was still on the air at the time she sent this card.  That was a good show.

USA US-1122126 received 05-20-2011

Sent by: sweetsaltfish
From: New York, USA
ID number: US-1122126
Notes: I'm not sure this cards shows ALL of the animals in the zoo, but it certainly does show a lot of them.  I see a hippo, a tiger, a koala, a jaguar, a chimpanzee, a giraffe, a panda, a macaw, a lion, a couple of orangutans, a gorilla, two elephants, a cheetah, two rhinos and two zebras.  Certainly they are some of the most popular animals in the zoo. What's your favorite?

Day Two Hundred Fifty-Nine

Ukraine UA-38158 received 07-27-2010

Sent by: Alina_Mart
From: Ukraine
ID number: UA-38158
Notes: This is another view of Kiev Pechersk Lavra (the Monastery of the Cave) that I posted on Wednesday.  In addition to the monastery and the cave, Kiev Perchesk Lavra is on of the largest Ukrainian museums.  Its collection includes historical church artifacts, folk art and rare photographs.  The museum also has tours of the catacombs, which contain mummified remains of Orthodox saints.

Day Two Hundred Fifty-Eight

Phobos - one of the 2 moons of Mars

Sent by: Not sure (I'll explain in the notes)
From: Netherlands
For: Private swap
Notes: This card was signed by all of the attendees of the Dutch Postcrossing meeting on May 7, 2010 in Utrecht, Netherlands.  Unfortunately, since so many people signed it, I'm not really sure which one of them I actually swapped with.  Oops!

If you're thinking that the photo looks like a blurry rock, you're right...sort of.  It is a photo of Phobos, one of the two moons of Mars, as seen by Mariner 9.  It's small, with a mean radius of just 11 kilometers, but it is still seven times mores massive than Mars' other moon, Deimos. The name comes from the Greek god Phobos, a son of Ares (aka Mars in the Roman empire).

FYI, this is my 600th post.  Yay.

Day Two Hundred Fifty-Seven

Ukraine - Kiev Pechersk Lavra, Kiev

Sent by: mindanao
From: Ukraine
For: Send Me a Card from My Album of Favourites Tag
Notes: This is Kiev Pechersk Lavra, or Kiev Monastery of the Cave.  It was actually founded in the 11th century in a cave overlooking the Dnieper River, and it is one of four cave monasteries in Ukraine.  There seems to be three separate buildings in this photo.  I have been unable to indentify the one on the left, but the tall tower in the middle is the Great Lavra Belltower, and on the right is The All Saints Church.  The monastery is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Day Two Hundred Fifty-Six

Star/Ship Atlantic

Notes: Before Disney had their own cruise line, there was Premier, which was the official cruise line of Walt Disney World - at least in the early 1990's when I got this card.  I took my first cruise on the Atlantic, one of Premier's Big Red Boats.  The year was 1993, and I was with my high school marching band.  The band played at the Bon Voyage party on the boat, and then again in a square in Nassau, Bahamas (I remember it being quite warm that day).  When we got back to Florida, we went to...Universal Studios.  Yeah, I bet you thought I was going to say Walt Disney World.  Nope...I've never been to any Disney park.

From: Ukraine
ID number: UA-76182
Notes: The Cathedral of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin is located in Sevastopol, southwestern Ukraine.  It was built between 1892 and 1905.  Services were held in the cathedral until 1962, when it was turned into an archive.  The cathedral was reconsecrated in 1992 and subsequently restored.

Day Two Hundred Fifty-Four

Finland FI-1170681 received 08-19-2011

Sent by: Poinsettia
From: Finland
ID number: FI-1170681
Notes: I don't really have much to say about this card.  There is no caption on the back, nor any indication of what this character might be called.  The sender's message also gave no clue.

Netherlands NL-709652 received 07-16-2011

Sent by: Ouwe
From: Netherlands
ID number: NL-709652
Notes: This card says "Greetings from the amusement park".  Which amusement park?  Your guess is as good as mine.  There is no more information on the card, and the sender simply wrote the ID number and his name.

So, two cards that I couldn't tell you much about.  That's probably why I didn't post them when I originally received them.

Day Two Hundred Fifty-Three

Thailand TH-37924 received 03-05-2010

Sent by: taojeaw
From: Thailand
ID number: TH-37924
Notes: Even though the caption on the back of this card gives a slightly different name to this floating market, Damnernsaduak, I do believe this is the same market as the card I posted on November 2nd.  This certainly looks like a very interesting way to do business.  You go to the customers instead of having the customers come to you.

Thailand TH-41438 received 05-07-2010

Sent by: SPsiam
From: Thailand
ID number: TH-41438
Notes: This stone temple is in the Phanom Run Historical Park in Buriram Province in eastern Thailand.  The temple is made of sandstone and laterite between the 10th and 13th centuries, and is built on the rim of an extinct volcano.  It is a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, and symoblises Mount Kailash, Shiva's heavenly dwelling.

Day Two Hundred Fifty-Two

Hollywood Creative Directory

Sent by: earlsranch
From: Colorado, USA
For: Private swap
Notes: As you can probably figure out, this is an ad card for the Hollywood Creative Directory.  The cover of the book the alien is holding is dated 1997, so I'm sure books like these were still in use.  Nowadays, though, all of the information that these books had can be found on the internet, and it can be updated much more regularly.  That's probably why the Hollywood Creative Directory is now out of print.

Day Two Hundred Fifty-One

Thailand TH-60315 received 12-20-2010

Sent by: pprugsa
From: Thailand
ID number: TH-60315
Notes: This card is from the Panalee Resort in Ratchaburi province in western Thailand.  The sender says that it has an African atmosphere, which is confirmed by the silhouette of an elephant on the back of the card.  Based on the photos on the website, it looks like a really beautiful place to visit.  Ratchaburi province is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Bangkok, and it shares a border with the country of Burma.

Day Two-Hundred Fifty

Netherlands NL-771312 received 09-08-2011

Sent by: LauraHo
From: Netherlands
ID number: NL-771312
Notes: Laura, the sender, says that this card really shows the weather in the Netherlands: rainy.  Umm...ok, I don't see any rain.  I do see an umbrella, and some shoes upside down on a fence.  But if those shoes got wet in the rain, is leaving them OUTSIDE on a fence in the rain really going to help them dry??

The caption at the top of the card says "Greetings from Zutphen".  Zutphen is a city of about 47,000 people in central Netherlands.

Day Two Hundred Forty-Nine

Thailand - Statue of King Ramkhmamhaeng, Sukhothai

Sent by: Thamonwan
From: Thailand
For: Private swap
Notes: King Ramkhamhaeng was the third king of the Phra Ruang dynasty, ruling from 1279-1298.  He is credited with creating the Thai alphabet, and making Theravada Buddhism the state religion of the kingdom.  This statue is in Sukhothai Historical Park, Sukhothai Province in the north of Thailand.

Day Two Hundred Forty-Eight

USA US-819296 received 09-10-2010

Sent by: balletbumm
From: California, USA
ID number: US-819296
Notes: The Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, California has a living recreation of a work of art each night.  This card is from a 2006 living recreation of Vincent Van Gogh's First Steps, after Millet.  Van Gogh painted 21 copies of it in 1890, based on the work First Steps by Jean-François Millet.

Day Two Hundred Forty-Seven

Thailand - The Temple of Dawn, Bangkok

Sent by: Thamonwan
From: Thailand
For: Private swap
Notes: This is the same temple as shown on the card from October 25th - Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn.  This card gives a much better view of the actual architecture of the temple.  According to both the sender and Wikipedia, it is known as Khmer-style architecture.

Thailand - Trading Place at Floating Market, Rajburi

Sent by: Thamonwan
From: Thailand
For: Private swap
Notes: Floating markets are apparently quite common, but according to Thamonwan, the Rajburi floating market (seen here), is the most famous.  I think Rajburi might be the same as Ratchaburi, which would make this the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.  The market is open every day until noon, and is a big tourist destination, which unfortunately has impacted its authenticity.

Day Two Hundred Forty-Six

China CN-285943 received 12-27-2010

Sent by: lavenowy
From: China
ID number: CN-285943
Notes: This card shows a red box with what appears to be another red box inside of it.  Both boxes have gold decorations on them.  But seriously, I have no idea what the significance of the box is.  The card does not have a caption, and the sender did not give me any information about the picture.

USA US-1257279 received 09-01-2011

Sent by: Elizabeth1979
From: Lansing, Michigan, USA
ID number: US-1257279
Notes: Meet Spockie.  Yes, that is the actual name of this etching by Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara.  It is part of the collection at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City.  The sender, Elizabeth, sent it to me because of my love of Star Trek (I'm sure that's not a surprise to you).  She also shared some of her favorite Star Trek quotes.  One that I particularly like is "I could be chasing an untamed ornithoid without cause."  That's how Data refers to a wild goose chase in the season 4 episode Data's Day.
