Notes: The Iditarod is an annual sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska.  It began in 1973 as a way to test which sled dog mushers were the best.  The locations of the race start as well as the checkpoints are adjusted based on weather, so the exact measured distance of the race can vary from year to year.  Typically, though, the northern route (run in even-numbered years) is about 1,112 miles (1,790 km) and the southern route (run in odd-numbered years) is about 1,131 miles (1,820 km) long.
