Day Three Hundred Thirty-Seven

Georgia - Fort Benning

For: US to US Traveling Envelope Round Robin - Group 5
Notes: Fort Benning, in western Georgia, was established in 1918 to provide basic training for World War I unites.  Today, its 182,000 acres supports more than 120,000 people, including active-duty solidiers, family members, retirees and civilian employees.  It is home to the US Army Armor School, the US Army Infantry School, and the US Army Ranger School.

Georgia - Providence Canyon

For: US to US Traveling Envelope Round Robin - Group 5
Notes: Providence Canyon State Park, which covers 1,003 acres, is located not far south of Fort Benning.  Unlike the Grand Canyon, Providence Canyon was not created over thousands of years.  Rather, it was formed by erosion caused by poor farming practices in the 19th century.  The canyon is 150 feet deep at its deepest point.

Day Three Hundred Thirty-Six

Malaysia - The Prime Minister's Office Complex and the Putra Mosque, Putrajaya

Sent by: SLLiew
From: Malaysia
For: Private swap
Notes: Putrajaya is a planned city just south of Kuala Lumpur.  It was established in 1995, and the seat of government was shifted to Putrajaya in 1999.  The building on the right is Perdana Putra, the Prime Minister's office complex.  The rose-tinted granite building on the left is Putra Mosque, which can hold 15,000 worshipers.  The body of water on the left is Putrajaya Lake, a man-made lake.

Day Three Hundred Thirty-Five

Georgia - Lake Reflections

For: US to US Traveling Envelope Round Robin - Flight 5
Notes: This is one of those cards that doesn't give a specific location.  The caption on the back of the card just talks about the reflection, so I have no idea which lake this is, or if it is even actually in the state of Georgia.  I have seen cards before that say they are from different states, but the photo on them is identical.  You never really know with generic photos like this.

Sent by: Mazelan
From: Johore, Malaysia
ID number: MY-57763
Notes: This building is located in Malacca City in southwestern Malaysia.  It is known as the Stadthuys, and it was built in 1650 as the official residence for the Dutch governors and their officers.  It now houses the Historical and Ethnography Museum.  It sits next to the Christ Church, purported to be the oldest Dutch building in the Orient.

Day Three Hundred Thirty-Three

Georgia - Greetings from Georgia

Sent by: deltiologist
From: Georgia, USA (at the time)
For: Private swap
Notes: I think this is the last card my from swap with Chris.  The back of the card as a list of facts about the state of Georgia (area, capital, nickname, motto, etc.), but it doesn't tell me what is actually pictured on the card.  I will, however, endeavor to figure it out.  The upper right is obviously the state capitol building in Atlanta.  The bottom left actually does say what it is - the Tybee Island Lighthouse.  I'm going to guess that the golf course on the upper left is Augusta National, where The Masters Tournament is held every year.  The stadium on the bottom has a big baseball sign in front of it, so I'd hazard to say that it is Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves.  And finally on the bottom right is The Big Chicken outside the KFC restaurant in Marietta, GA.

Sent by: newrule
From: Malaysia
ID number: MY-63293
Notes: Batu Caves contain one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside of India.  Since 1892, the Thaipusam festival has been celebrated here.  The caves, located near Kuala Lumpur, are comprised of limestone.  Visitors must climb 272 steps to reach the entrance to the caves 100 meters above the ground. The steps were originally made of wood, but have since been replaced with concrete.

Day Three Hundred Thirty-One

Georgia - Atlanta multiview

Sent by: deltiologist
From: Georgia, USA (at the time)
For: Private swap
Notes: It's probably no big surprise that this card shows various scenes around the city of Atlanta, Georgia. I mean, the card does say "Atlanta" in big letters at the top.  Along with the scenes of downtown, there are three stadiums - Turner Field (formerly Centennial Olympic Stadium), Atlanta-Fulton Country Stadium (which was demolished in 1997), and the Georgia Dome.  The statue in the lower right corner is of Hank Aaron, who played for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves from 1954-1974.  Obviously, the fruits are peaches, and I believe the flowers at the bottom are Cherokee roses, the state flower of Georgia.

Georgia - Centennial Park, Atlanta

Sent by: deltiologist
From: Georgia, USA (at the time)
For: Private swap
Notes: This is Centennial Park in downtown Atlanta.  It's a 21 acre park that was built as a gathering place for the 1996 Olympic Games.  Unfortunately, it is probably best known as the site of the July 27, 1996 bombing that killed one person (a second died of a heart attack) and injured 111 people.  The fountain in this photo is the Fountain of Rings, which features computer-controlled water jets and lights set to music.  Every summer, the park hosts a summer concert series, as well as an Independence Day concert and fireworks.

Day Three Hundred Thirty

Lithuania LT-154879 received 10-21-2011

Sent by: Jacob0223
From: Lithuania
ID number: LT-154879
Notes: Verkiai Palace is an 18th-century mansion located in Vilnius, Lithuania.  It has been called the "Versailles of Vilnius".  It was severely damaged during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812, but was rebuilt and restored by Prince Ludwig Wittenstein.  After World War II, the palace buildings were used as educational institutions and an art museum.  This card, which is dated 1983, shows a 16th century credenza and the ceiling in the Renaissance Hall.

Lithuania LT-126544 received 06-07-2011

Sent by: Daivam
From: Vilnius, Lithuania
ID number: LT-126544
Notes: Trakai Island Castle is a castle (really?) on an island (duh!) in Lake Galvé in Lithuania.  Construction on the castle began in the 14th century, and continued in phases through the 16th century.  During wars in the 17th century, the castle was damaged and not reconstructed until the 20th century.  The major reconstruction started after World War II, and finished in 1961.  The castle is now a major tourist attraction.

The end of my year of posting cards is rapidly approaching, but I think I will try to continue posting after the year is up.  I will be putting up a few polls to gauge what might work better.  The first one is on the top of the column to the right.

Day Three Hundred Twenty-Nine

Georgia - Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville

Sent by: deltiologist
From: Georgia, USA (at the time)
Notes: Chris, the sender, took this photo himself.  He didn't give me the name of where the photo was taken; instead he gave me the coordinates: 34.3410, -83.8485.  I entered the coordinates into Google Maps, and it showed the location as Thompson Bridge Road in Gainsville, Georgia.  The bridge crosses the Little River.

Day Three Hundred Twenty-Eight

Italy IT-7440 received 07-17-2007

Sent by: gio_anna
From: Rome, Italy
ID number: IT-7440
Notes: This is a card that I have had for quite a while.  In fact, it is the sixth card I ever received from Postcrossing, way back in 2007.  I don't think I have ever posted it to my blog before, or if I have, it has been so long that I have forgotten. If it is a repeat, well, TOUGH!  I like it, mostly because of  how the cat is sitting there having its photo taken in front of the Colosseum just like a tourist.

Day Three Hundred Twenty-Seven

Florida - Sarasota

For: US to US Travelling Envelope Round Robin - Flight 7
Notes: From a distance, these may look like real dolphins, but they are actually part of the fountain on Island Park in Sarasota, Florida.  Sarasota is located along the west coast of Florida, south of Tampa Bay and north of Fort Myers.  It has a population of over 53,000 people, and the city's area includes several barrier islands between the mainland and the Gulf of Mexico.

Day Three Hundred Twenty-Six

Italy IT-81236 received 04-12-2010

Sent by: antiochia
From: Rome, Italy
ID number: IT-81236
Notes: While the front of the card says Rome, the caption on the back says that this is actually an aerial view of Vatican City.  Ok, so Vatican City is completely surrounded by Rome, so yes, technically it shows both.  The domed building in the center is St. Peter's Basilica, with St. Peter's Square in front of it.  The round building in the foreground is Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian.

Day Three Hundred Twenty-Five

Florida - Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay

For: US to US Traveling Envelope Round Robin - Flight 7
Notes: The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is a 4.1 miles (6.67 km) bridge spanning Tampa Bay between St. Petersburg and Terra Ceia, Florida.  It is made of steel and concrete, and was completed in 1987, replacing an older bridge that partially collapsed after a collision in 1980.  It is the longest concrete segmental cable stay bridge in the United States.

Day Three Hundred Twenty-Four

Italy - Salento Multiview 2

Sent by: sergioadriana
From: Italy
For: Private swap
Notes: Salento is Italy's southeastern-most peninsula, forming the heel of the "boot".  The peninsula is composed of limestone, which was used to build the structures shown here.  I believe they may be coastal towers, which were built mostly in the 15th and 16th centuries to protect the coastline from attack.

Italy - Salento Multiview 1

Sent by: sergioadriana
From: Italy
For: Private swap
Notes: This card shows more of the sea that surrounds Salento - the Adriatic sea to the east, and the Ionian to the southwest.  The cliff in the lower center photo really shows the limestone well.  And of course, the building on the left is another of the coastal watchtowers.

Day Three Hundred Twenty-Three

Florida - Cinderella's Castle, Walt Disney World

Sent by: dan1066
From: Louisiana, USA
For: Private swap
Notes: This is the castle at Walt Disney World in Orlando.  That makes it Cinderella's castle.  It is 189 ft. (58 m.) tall, which is more than 100 feet taller than Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disneyland in California.  I have never seen this castle in person; however, I have seen Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, which is said to have been the model for this fairy tale castle.

USA US-766197 received 07-30-2010

Sent by: America
From: Florida, USA
ID number: US-766197
Notes: A trip to Walt Disney World just would not be complete without a visit with Mickey Mouse.  This postcard celebrates Mickey's 60th birthday, which would have been in 1988, as he debuted in 1928.  Speaking of 60 years, this year marks the 60th anniversary of the opening of the other U.S. Disney park, Disneyland.  Wow!

Day Three Hundred Twenty-Two

Italy IT-126445 received 03-12-2011

Sent by: Gianni-Cand
From: Milan, Italy
ID number: IT-126445
Notes: Rome has many famous landmarks that are popular with tourists.  If you tried to show all of them on a postcard, the pictures would be so small that you wouldn't be able to see what they were.  That's probably why this card only shows four.  On the upper left is the Roman Forum, the ancient marketplace.  Next to it is the Altare della Patria, also known as the National Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of the unified Italy.  The Colosseum is on the lower left, and is probably the most recognizable location of these four.  The bottom right shows St. Peter's Basilica, a Roman Catholic church located within Vatican City.

Day Three Hundred Twenty-One

Florida - Little Indians Softball Team, Naples

Sent by: iSteven
From: Pennsylvania, USA
For: Lottery for Round Robin Hosts
Notes: This card was part of a completely random set of cards that I received as part of a lottery win a few years ago.  According to the back of the card, these three girls are part of the Little Indians softball team in Naples, Florida.

Day Three Hundred Twenty

Ireland DE-391448 received 08-11-2009

Sent by: kleiner_huepfer
From: Stuttgart, Germany
ID number: DE-391448
Notes: Here is another case of someone from one country sending a card from another country.  The sender said that she enjoys visiting Ireland, so she sent a card from Ireland.  As the card says, this is a croft in the region of Connemara, in County Galway in the west of Ireland.

Day Three Hundred Nineteen

Florida - The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Orlando

Sent by: Kaaren the Vampire Slayer
From: Florida, USA
Notes: Now this is a place that I'd really love to visit.  The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened at Universal Orlando on June 18, 2010.  As I have not been to Universal Orlando since about 1993, I obviously haven't been here.  I believe this card shows the village of Hogsmeade (the back of the card is stamped by the Hogsmeade Owl Post) with Hogwarts in the background.  We did have a Harry Potter exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry a few years back, which was really cool (Buckbeak the hippogriff was my favorite part), but it was nothing compared to how cool this would be.

Day Three Hundred Eighteen

Indonesia ID-21305 received 02-17-2012

Sent by: Chagit
From: Indonesia
ID number: ID-21305
Notes: Well, I don't have to tell you what this card shows, because the card tells you itself.  I do believe that Mount Semeru is the tall one in the back with the smoke coming out of it.  Yes, all of these are volcanoes, formed across the caldera of the ancient volcano Tengger.  They are located in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Day Three Hundred Seventeen

Florida - Long Boat Key

For: US to US Traveling Envelope Round Robin - Flight 5
Notes: When I first looked at this card, I was certain that this was one of the of Florida Keys - one of the string of islands off of the southern coast of Florida.  However, it is not.  Long Boat (or Longboat) Key is located off the west coast of Florida, between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.  The island, and the town of the same name, have a population of around 7,000 people.  Almost the entire land of the island is occupied with single-family homes and condominiums.

Florida - Miami Beach, Miami

For: US to US Traveling Envelope Round Robin - Flight 7
Notes: As this card says, this is Miami Beach.  It is separated from Miami proper by Biscayne Bay, and has a population of around 90,000 people.  According to the back of the card, this view is looking along Collins Avenue towards the Fontainebleau Hotel.  I'm not sure which building is the hotel though.

Day Three Hundred Sixteen

India IN-14150 received 07-31-2010

Sent by: kapre
From: New Delhi, India
ID number: IN-14150
Notes: Qutub Minar is the 2nd tallest minar (or minaret) in India at 237.8 ft (72.5 m) tall.  It is made of red sandstone and marble, and has 379 steps leading to the top.  Construction was started in 1173, but not finished until 1368.  The main function of a minar is as a vantage point from which to issue the 5-times-daily call to prayer for Muslims.  Qutub Minar is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Indonesia CN-159573 received 02-11-2010
Sent by: AnnaPiu
From: China
ID number: CN-159573
Notes: While the sender of this card is from China, the card actually shows a Hindu temple in Indonesia.  Like the previous card, this one also shows a UNESCO World Heritage site.  This is the main temple in the complex - the Shiva temple.  It is 154 ft (47 m) tall.  Construction on the complex was started in the year 850, but the site was abandoned after an earthquake destroyed the temple in the 16th century.  In 1918, the Dutch began restoration of the complex, and the restoration work continues to this day.

Day Three Hundred Fifteen

Florida - Lakeland

Sent by: chiefal
From: Lakeland, Florida, USA
For: Private swap
Notes: Lakeland is located in central Florida between Orlando and Tampa, and has a population of just over 97,000.  With a name like Lakeland, you would expect there to be a number of lakes in the area - and there are.  There a 38 named lakes in and around Lakeland, with Lake Parker being the largest. Many swans inhabit the area, descendants of a pair sent to Lakeland by Queen Elizabeth.

Day Three Hundred Fourteen

Greece GR-16430 received 02-22-2011

Sent by: enyalios
From: Greece
ID number: GR-16430
Notes: As I have mentioned before, I am a big fan of the Olympics, which is probably why enyalios sent this card to me.  This stadium in Athens, Greece, also known as Panathenaic Stadium, is where the modern Olympics began in 1896.  It was reconstructed entirely in marble from the remains of the remains of an ancient Stadium.  It was also used for the archery competition and the end of the marathon for the 2004 Olympic Games. I can't imagine that sitting on marble for any period of time would be very comfortable!

Day Three Hundred Thirteen

Florida - Main Street Flower Market, Walt Disney World

Sent by: deltiologist
From: Georgia, USA (at the time)
For: My birthday
Notes: As noted above, deltiologist was nice enough to send this adorable card to me for my birthday several years ago.  Perhaps Mickey is giving Minnie those flowers because it was her birthday as well.  Maybe if I ever get to Disneyland or World in the future, I'll ask her. :)

Day Three Hundred Twelve

Germany DE-1067416 received 10-15-2011

Sent by: sandrainderoase
From: Germany
ID number: DE-1067416
Notes: The caption on the back of this card is in German, so I did my best to translate it using Google Translate.  If you've ever used Google Translate, you'll know that what comes out in English doesn't always make the most sense, so I'll give you the gist of it.  This photo shows street trading with plaster casts under a railroad bridge in Berlin in 1910.  And that sign in the background?  That translates to beer hall.  I bet you would never have guessed that one!!

Day Three Hundred Eleven

California - Sierra Buttes Lookout

Sent by: Green Tortuga
From: Seattle, Washington, USA
Notes: I thought I was all finished with the California cards, but then I found this one hiding amongst the Connecticut cards.  Silly card - don't you know that is all the way across the country??  Anyway, this card shows Upper and Lower Sardine Lakes in the Sierra Buttes, which are part of the Tahoe National Forest.  Ryan mailed the card from Belden, CA, which has a population of 22, according to Wikipedia.  That's definitely a SMALL town!!

Day Three Hundred Ten

Germany DE-899315 received 04-28-2011

Sent by: Jule1
From: Germany
ID number: DE-899315
Notes: Frederick II, also known as Frederick the Great, was the king of Prussia from 1740-1786. This statue of him sitting on his favorite horse, Conde, is located along the Unter den Linden, a boulevard in Berlin.  The statue is 44 ft (13.5 m) tall, which you can't really see here because the card doesn't show the entire base.  I do love the way it show the shadow though.

Germany DE-560079 received 04-05-2010

Sent by: puggle
From: Germany
ID number: DE-560079
Notes: This card shows the Castle Krukenberg at Helmarshausen.  As you can clearly see, the castle is in ruins, but it is still used for worship services and other events in the summer.  Obviously, it wouldn't be such a good idea to hold events there in the winter!

Day Three Hundred Nine

USA US-744882 received 07-07-2010

Sent by: mlidren
From: Denver, Colorado, USA
ID number: US-744882
Notes: As it is about to be really cold here (high temperatures in the single digits Fahrenheit), a nice view of a summer day seemed like a good idea.  Plus it was the next card in the box, so that worked out.  The card doesn't give a specific location - it just says that it shows a field of mixed wildflowers in the Colorado Rockies.  I love the purple ones!

Colorado - Hot Air Balloons

Sent by: earlsranch
From: Denver, Colorado, USA
For: Private swap
Notes: Another nice summery scene, and another card without a specific location.  This card just says "Hot air ballooning in COLORADO."  Really?  I never would have guessed that.

Day Three Hundred Eight

Germany DE-623990 received 06-24-2010

Sent by: rosenbusch
From: Germany
ID number: DE-623990
Notes: That guy is going to get wet if he doesn't run faster!  I wish I could tell you where this photo was taken, but neither the card nor the sender make mention of it.  Clearly it's somewhere along a coast.  That's about as specific as I can get.

Day Three Hundred Seven - Happy New Year!

USA US-564391 received 12-04-2009

Sent by: rosieboat
From: California, USA
ID number: US-564391
Notes: Here are some varied scenes from around the state of California.  From left to right are the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the State Capitol Building in Sacramento and a lovely view of Yosemite National Park.  The mountain at the bottom is Mt. Shasta, which is located in far northern California.  It is the fifth tallest peak in the state, and is considered a potentially active volcano.

Only fifty-eight posts left to complete my year!
