Day Three Hundred Fifty-Five

New Zealand NZ-38211 received 06-28-2010

Notes: This is a New Zealand pigeon, also known as a kererū.  They eat the fruits of native trees, and play an important role in spreading the seeds from those fruits.  The introduction of non-native species such as the common brushtail possum and several species of rat have significantly reduced the amount of fruit available for the birds to eat. The pigeon populations are also under threat from human encroachment and hunting, but they are now protected under the Wildlife Act, and anyone who shoots one can be prosecuted.

Can you believe I am only 10 days away from completing my year of blogging postcards??
