Notes: The State Capitol building, or Legislative Building, in the center is one of the buildings that make up the capitol campus.  It has the tallest self-supported masonry dome in the United States, and the fourth tallest in the world.  (The three taller domes are St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, St. Paul's Cathedral in London and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.)  In 1949, an earthquake damage the dome's cupola so badly that it had to be replaced.  Another earthquake in 1965 severely damaged the dome's brick buttresses. Since then, there have been a number of improvements to help the dome withstand further earthquakes.  According to hootnoodle, the body of water in the background is Puget Sound, with the Olympic Mountains far in the distance.
