Festival Fever

Japan JP-541248 received 05-30-2014

ID number: JP-541248
Notes: This is the Chinatown (or Nankinmachi) area of Kobe, one of three designated Chinatowns in Japan.  The other two are in Yokohama and Nagasaki, although Kobe's is known as the most colorful and foreign-looking.  rira believes that this card shows the Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival. It takes place on the night of the full moon that is closest to the autumnal equinox.  This year, that would be September 27th.

Notes: This is sort of a multi-national card.  It was sent from Finland.  The snow sculpture is of the Ipiranga Museum in Sao Paolo, Brazil (and it is a very impressive sculpture, I must say).  At first, it might seem obvious that the snow festival for which the sculpture was built took place in Finland; however, the Asian language on the signs and on the upper left of the card tell otherwise.  This is the from the annual Sapporo Snow Festival, which takes place over three sites in Sapporo, including Odori Park, where this sculpture was located.  I'd love to know how long it took to create such a large and detailed building out of snow.
