Notes: Assisi is a town of over 27,000 people, located in central Italy, and built by the Romans as Asisium in the 3rd century B.C.  It is the birthplace of St. Francis, founder of the Franciscan order of the Roman Catholic Church.  A number of the medieval buildings in Assisi are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the Basilica of San Francesco, which I believe is on the left side of this photo towards the background.  The castle in the upper right is the Rocca Maggiore, a castle built between the 14th and 16th centuries to intimidate the people in the town below (or so says Wikipedia).
