Pastoral or Populous

Texas - Lone Longhorn

For: US to US Travelling Envelope Round Robin - Flight 5
Notes: You will probably recognize this animal as a Texas Longhorn.  Longhorns are descended from the aurochs (ancient wild cattle) of the Middle East and India.  The cattle were brought to North America by the Spanish starting in the 1490s, and over several centuries, the cattle adapted to the landscape into the hearty breed we know today.  Obviously the most distinctive characteristic of the Longhorn is their horns, which can grow up the 7 ft (2.1 m) from tip to tip.  The horns look intimidating, but apparenly Longhorns a generally pretty gentle, making them ideal to be trained as riding steers.  Longhorns can be any color or mix of colors, although dark red and white is the most common.

Notes: The city of Dallas has a population of around 1.2 million people, with a metropolitan area of around 7 million, the 4th largest metro area in the country.  The city was officially incorporated in 1856, eleven years after the Republic of Texas was annexed by the United States.  This card shows the downtown area of Dallas, with a field of bluebonnets (the Texas state flower) in the foreground.  Of the buildings in the picture, the tower towards the left is the most distinctive. It is the Reunion Tower, the 5th tallest observation tower in the United States at 561 ft (171 m).
