Notes: When you think of false teeth, who is the first famous person you think of?  If your answer was George Washington, you are very smart.  Or you read ahead.  Either way, these dentures did indeed belong to George Washington.  Unlike the myth, though, they are not made of wood.  These are made of animal teeth, human teeth and vegetable ivory, fitted into a lead base.  FYI, vegetable ivory is the hard, white endosperm of the seeds of some palm trees.  And yes, I did say lead base.  Having these teeth in your mouth for hours every day sounds like a great way to get lead poisoning!  The dentures are on display at the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center at Washington's home, Mount Vernon.
