Notes: The Battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862 along Antietam Creek in northwest Maryland.  It was the bloodiest single-day battle of the U.S. Civil War, with over 20,000 casualties.  The bridge shown here is named Burnside's Bridge, after the Union General whose troops tried to capture the bridge. 450 Confederate soldiers in the hills beyond the bridge held of 14,000 Union troops for many hours until they were finally overcome and the bridge was captured by the Union.  Today, the bridge is part of the Antietam National Battlefield, which also includes a visitor center, a cemetery, and a hospital museum.
