Notes: If you think that it is unusual to see a Catholic cathedral in China, you are right.  This is St. Ignatius Cathedral in Shanghai, which was built between 1905 and 1910.  Since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, all religions are permitted to operate under the supervision of the State Administration for Religious Affairs.  As such, the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association does not accept the primacy of the Pope.  So while this cathedral is Catholic, it is not Roman Catholic.
