Notes: In 1879, the prefect of Taipeh Prefecture ordered a new capital city enclosed by walls.  The wall, which measured almost five kilometers in length, were completed in 1884.  There were five gates - Jing Fu to the east, Bao-Cheng to the west, Li-Zheng to the south, the Cheng-En gate to the north, and an auxiliary gate known as Chong-Zi.  The west gate was destroyed during the Japanese colonial rule.  The other four gates still exist, although only Cheng-En, shown here, retains its original appearance.
