Notes: If this castle looks familiar to you, that's because I posted another card of it on July 18, 2014.  And it wasn't just a similar card - it was the exact same card.  I am very surprised by how many times I have received duplicate cards. Maybe some areas don't have a very large postcard selection. Also, I'm sure a lot of people don't look through all of the cards a person has received to make sure they are not sending a duplicate.  I don't often do that.

Notes: This is the east wall of the Amber Room in the Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg.  Actually, this is a replica of the room as the original was stolen.  How can a room be stolen, you ask?  Well, the walls were decorated with amber panels with gold leaf and mirrors.  During World War II, members of the German army removed the panels from the wall, packed them up and took them to Königsberg Castle.  In January, 1945, Hitler gave orders to remove the looted possessions from Königsberg.  After that, the original Amber Room panels disappeared, and they have never been found.
