Statuesque

Russia RU-845429 received 03-26-2012

Sent by: Uroboros9
From: Saint Petersburg, Russia
ID number: RU-845429
Notes: This is a statue of World War I and Russian Civil War hero Vasiliy Chapaev (or Chapayev), surrounded by a commissar, a sailor, a female worker, a partisan, a Bashkir and a Red Army soldier.  Chapaev was a Red Army commander during World War I, and then in 1919, during Russia's civil war, he was shot and drowned in the Ural River, but his body was never recovered.  In 1923, a hugely fictionalized story of his life was published, which was made into a movie called Chapaev in 1934.  The film was very successful in the Soviet Union.  Oddly enough, it doesn't seem to be available from Netflix.  :)

Ummm.. he was a commander in World War II, but was killed in 1919? I'll leave any conclusions one might make of this as an exercise for the reader.
