Colossal Castillo

Puerto Rico - Castillo San Cristóbal, San Juan National Historic Site

Notes: This is another card I purchased while on vacation back in November.  After we disembarked the cruise ship, we took a tour of San Juan that then dropped us off at the airport.  We spent over an hour at Castillo San Cristóbal, and if it hadn't been so darn hot, I might have enjoyed it.  Castillo San Cristóbal is a fort built by the Spanish in the 17th and 18th centuries.  It is the largest Spanish-built fortification in the New World,  Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States in 1898 after then end of the Spanish-American War, and the fort was taken over by the U.S. military.  During World War II, concrete pillboxes and an underground bunker were built as extra defenses.  The Army moved out of the fort in 1961. and it was then taken over by the National Park Service.
